Online Banking Security
At F & M Community Bank, we are committed to providing secure
online service. We believe that providing the highest security and
preserving the confidentiality of your banking information are two
of our most important responsibilities. We want to make your online
visit with us as secure as possible and you can be sure we will
do our part to keep your information confidential. For this reason,
we would like to explain how we protect the security of your online
information.
How F & M Community Bank protects your information
Firewall
F & M Community Bank uses a firewall, which is a combination
of hardware and software designed to provide security by blocking
intrusions and directing valid information requests coming to our
Bank. The configuration begins by filtering requests and allowing
only F & M Community Bank authorized requests to pass through.
With the use of the firewall, F & M Community Bank provides
constant monitoring, allowing only authorized users access to the
online banking Internet site.
Internet Encryption
F & M Community Bank requires the use of a browser that supports
128-bit encryption such as Microsoft® Internet Explorer 5.0
or Netscape Navigator® 7.0. 128-bit encryption technology represents
the strongest method of data encryption.
Encryption is the scrambling of information for transmission back
and forth between two points. This technology encodes the data by
using a mathematical formula to scramble the data for secure transmittal
on the Internet. A key is then required to decode the transmitted
data.
User ID and Passwords
To authenticate your online banking session you enter a User ID
and a Password, both of which are encrypted as they pass over the
Internet. At the time of online banking enrollment, F & M Community
Bank will provide you with a User ID and a password. Your password
can be changed as often as you would like when you log-on to our
online banking session. A minimum of 6 characters is required when
creating a password. The password must consist of at least
five alpha characters and one numeric character.
How you can protect your account
- Memorize your User ID and password, never write it down or
give it to anyone.
- Change your password frequently.
- Use a password that is unique, doesn’t contain personal
information and is not similar to your User ID.
- Always log-off from any open sessions if you are not actively
working within your account. Never physically leave your computer
with an active session open. When you are finished banking online,
click the log-off button instead of just closing the browser window.
- Be aware, particularly when using public computers, that programs
exist which record keystroke information and could compromise
your online security
- Make sure no one is watching you enter your User ID or password
information on the computer.
- Use a web browser with 128-bit encrypted technology
In addition, you should be aware of certain risks associated when
dealing with programs or files from unknown sources – this
applies to software available for download on the Internet or sent
to you via email. Installing files from unknown sources raises the
risk of unknowingly downloading infected software or computer viruses.
When these programs are installed on your computer they can potentially
tamper with your files without your knowledge. Never run unfamiliar
programs received from email or the Internet. Always be a bit suspicious
of email that you receive with attachments.
We recommend the use of virus detection software that can ensure
your computer is free from viruses. We also encourage you to check
for updates to your detection software programs and install updates
as soon as available.
With enhanced interactive content and online security, and your
cooperation and good computer sense, F & M Community Bank can
provide you with a safe and secure way of enjoying the great convenience
and security of online banking.
